LEITAT

Partner description and expertise

LEITAT is a Spanish Technological Center specialized in production technologies. LEITAT develops R&D activities in the areas of biomedicine, biotechnologies, environment, surface treatments, material science, nanotechnology and renewable energies with deep knowledge and experience in technological transfers to several industrial sectors. Furthermore, LEITAT can provide a full range of services the different industrial sectors going from material design, testing and processing, to the development of prototypes. In particular, the several testing departments at LEITAT offer services for the determination of more than 800 physical and chemical parameters (including ISO Certification and Normalization). Additionally, LEITAT participates each year in many projects funded by the regional and national governments, as well as projects co-funded by the European Commission, and develops private R&D projects funded by industrial partners.

Role in the BATCure project

LEITAT will be responsible for the following tasks:

WP1 NEW MODELS - Development, validation and optimisation of essential new models and tools. Generation of monoclonal antibodies. Immunize, screen, produce and purify high affinity monoclonal antibodies against CLN3, CLN6, CLN7 and for SCMAS.

WP3 METABOLOME - Identifying therapeutic target pathways, and developing new diagnostic and monitoring techniques using metabonomics.  Profiling of microvesicles from vitro/vivo models and human samples by analyzing the miRNA expression profile and their proteome.

Marc Masa, Biologist (1999-2007). While working at Merck Serono, his research activities were focused on target discovery/validation on novel cancer therapeutic targets. Additionally, he led a kinase inhibitor programme coordinating groups from Spain and Germany for the identification of potential leads. Apart from research activities, he was involved in resource allocation for project execution and time control dedicated projects at Merck’s Bioresearch Laboratory in Barcelona. In 2008, he joined the LEITAT Technology Center as a founder member of the new Biomed unit focused on preclinical oncology. He has participated in several domestic and international projects, either as a partner or as a PI, dealing with biological cancer therapy discovery/development and diagnosis (including cancer but not limited to).  Recently, he has been appointed as the diagnostic working group manager at LEITAT. This working group is made up of several KETs experts (nanotechnology, micro-nanoelectronics) and scientist from environment, microbiology and biomedicine field.

Guillermo Quintás, PhD Chemistry (2004). He has worked as a researcher in different centres such as Laboratorio de Salud Pública (Valencia, Spain), Institute of Chemical Technologies and Analytics (Viena, Austria), Department of Analytical Chemistry (University of Valencia, Spain) and Advancell (Barcelona, Spain). Since 2011, he is working at the Safety and Sustainability Division of LEITAT. His research focuses on the design and development of R+D projects in the field of bioanalysis and metabolomics. He is the co-author of ca. 75 publications in scientific journals and book chapters, ca. 35 communications to international congresses and has supervised a PhD (Univ. Valencia, 2007-2011) in the field of analytical chemistry (chromatography, mass spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy), clinical metabolomics (perinatology, cancer research, hepatology) and chemometrics.
